**KEY UPDATES***
A temporary satellite fitness facility, located on the second floor of the John W. Berry Sports Center, will open during the Lewinstein Athletic Center closure to accommodate all Dartmouth students and existing gym members.
Please see below for full details.
This summer, the Lewinstein Athletic Center at 16 E. Wheelock Street will undergo a planned closure as part of Dartmouth's campus-wide energy transition, converting from steam to hot water heating and installing new distribution piping. All Lewinstein facilities are scheduled to reopen mid-August 2026.
What's closing and when?
Starting Monday, May 4, 2026: The indoor basketball courts and second-floor track (located in the area of the Lewinstein Athletic Center known as Alumni Gym) will close.
Starting Monday, June 15, 2026: The remainder of the Lewinstein Athletic Center will close, including:
- Zimmerman Fitness Center
- Karl Michael and Spaulding Pools
- All locker rooms
- All offices, including staff and team offices
What remains open:
- Boss Tennis Center
- Berry Squash Courts
- Davis Varsity House (including the Athletic Training Room)
- Manley Equipment Room (serving varsity student-athletes)
- Outdoor pickleball and tennis courts (Berry & Topliff)
- Outdoor basketball court
- The Sailing Center (recreational paddleboarding and sailing on Lake Mascoma)
For varsity student-athletes and coaches: The Manley Equipment Room in the Lewinstein basement will continue providing equipment and laundry services. Varsity student-athletes will be notified of any changes. The access point will be via the back exterior door only.
Why is this happening? This closure is part of Dartmouth's campus-wide energy transition — modernizing heating and cooling infrastructure by converting from steam to hot water and installing new distribution piping. It's a significant investment in a more efficient, flexible system built to adapt as energy technology evolves. We recognize this is an inconvenience and have worked to minimize the impact.
TEMPORARY FITNESS FACILITIES
1. BERRY SATELLITE GYM
Location and Access
The primary satellite fitness facility will be located on the second floor of the
John W. Berry Sports Center, at
6 South Park Street, Hanover.
Members will enter through the main entrance on the ground floor facing S. Park St (see photo above) and will scan their access cards at a temporary desk at the entrance. Members will only be permitted to use the fitness facilities, Straus Dance Studio, and open squash courts (when not being used by varsity student-athletes) on the second floor.
Students and gym members will use the same Dartmouth access card they currently use for Lewinstein to enter the Berry and Leverone facilities—no additional registration or credential changes are required.

The temporary satellite facility in Berry will operate from 6 AM to 10 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 10 PM on weekends.

The Berry temporary satellite facility will be outfitted to support a wide range of workouts and plans to include:
- 25–30 cardio machines
- Seven pin-loaded universal weight machines
- Dumbbells and benches
- Resistance bands
- Medicine balls
- Foam rollers
- Jump ropes
- Yoga mats
2. LEVERONE WEIGHT EQUIPMENT

Leverone Field House at
26 S. Park Street, Hanover. This fitness facility will be open to non-varsity students and gym members on designated days and times, which will be posted here when available in June and shared in Vox Daily.
Students and gym members will use the same Dartmouth access card they currently use for Lewinstein to enter Leverone Field House —no additional registration or credential changes are required.
The Leverone temporary varsity weight room is almost entirely free weight–based and will include some of the following:
- Olympic lifting stations with platforms, racks, barbells, and bumper plates
- Cable stacks
- Specialty plate-loaded machines
- Benches
In addition, all squash courts in the Berry Sports Center will be available for student and gym member use, except during designated varsity student-athlete training times.
Students and existing gym members can also continue using the outdoor facilities around Lewinstein during the closure, which include the outdoor basketball court, and the Berry and Topliff pickleball and tennis courts.

Parking access during the summer closure will remain consistent with those in place for the Lewinstein Athletic Center:
- Only Dartmouth employees with green parking passes may park in the Berry Sports Center lot.
- There are three Dartmouth-owned public pay-to-park spaces on the north end of the Berry Sports Center.
- Handicapped parking is available both in the Berry lot and along E. Wheelock Street.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Understanding the Spaces
When people say "Alumni Gym," what space are they referring to?
The Lewinstein Athletic Center building was called "Alumni Gym" for many years before being renamed the “Lewinstein Athletic Center” following a generous gift from Diana and Stephen Lewinstein '63 P'98 in 2023.
Today, "Alumni Gym" refers to a specific space
inside the Lewinstein Athletic Center — the area that houses the indoor basketball courts and second-floor track. This space closes on Monday, May 4. The rest of Lewinstein, including the Zimmerman Fitness Center, pools, and locker rooms, remains open until Monday, June 15.

Closures & Timeline
What is closing and when? Two phased closures are happening this summer:
- Monday, May 4, 2026: The indoor basketball courts and second-floor track (Alumni Gym) close.
- Monday, June 15, 2026: The remainder of Lewinstein closes, including the Zimmerman Fitness Center, Karl Michael and Spaulding Pools, all locker rooms, and all offices.
The Lewinstein Athletic Center is scheduled to reopen mid-August 2026.
Why is the Lewinstein Athletic Center closing?
The Lewinstein Athletic Center is undergoing energy upgrades as part of Dartmouth's campus-wide initiative to modernize heating and cooling infrastructure by converting buildings from steam to hot water and installing new distribution piping. This work will produce a more efficient, flexible system built to adapt as energy technology evolves.
Why can't the work be phased so the building stays open?
Renovation work on the Lewinstein Athletic Center began in March 2025 and has been conducted in phases to keep the building open as long as possible. The current phase involves installation of new mechanical systems and multiple utility shutdowns affecting power, domestic water, and pool heating, making it impractical to keep the building open during this work.
Facilities & Access
What facilities will remain open this summer?
The following are scheduled to operate as normal throughout the closure:
- Manley Equipment Room (accessible via outdoor entrance only)
- Berry Squash Courts
- Boss Tennis Center
- Davis Varsity House (including the Athletic Training Room)
- Outdoor pickleball and tennis courts (Berry & Topliff)
- Outdoor basketball court
- The Sailing Center (recreational paddleboarding and sailing on Lake Mascoma)
I'm a varsity student-athlete. Can I still access the Manley Equipment Room?
Yes. The Manley Equipment Room in the Lewinstein basement will remain open throughout the closure, accessible via the outdoor entrance. Signage will direct you.
My office is in the Lewinstein Athletic Center. Where will I work during the closure?
The Athletic and Recreation facilities team will provide temporary office assignments around mid May. They will do their best to anticipate everyone’s needs.
Memberships & Refunds
I'm a community gym member. Will I receive a refund for the closure period?
Refunds will not be issued for 2025–2026 memberships.
However, in recognition of the inconvenience, all current memberships will be extended at no charge through mid-August. The 2026–2027 renewal cycle will begin when Lewinstein reopens, rather than the standard July 1 start date.
Current gym memberships for the 2025–2026 season run through June 30, 2026, meaning the Lewinstein closure affects the final two weeks of the membership period (June 15–30). During those two weeks, members will have access to:
- The temporary satellite gym located in Berry
- Leverone Field House temporary weight facility
- Berry Squash Courts
- Outdoor pickleball and tennis courts (Berry & Topliff)
- Outdoor basketball court
I'm a Dartmouth faculty or staff member with a gym membership as part of my wellness benefit. What are my options?
During the closure, faculty and staff gym members who elected the Lewinstein Athletic Center membership wellness benefit for 2026 will have access to the temporary gym in Berry, and the varsity weight equipment in Leverone. Access to indoor fitness classes will continue to be available for a fee. In addition, the following adjustments are being made to the wellness benefit:
- Current wellness benefit members’ taxable value amount will be reduced for the second half of the year. This taxation typically takes place in August, however, the wellness office will delay it until September, after Lewinstein reopens.
- The benefits enrollment system has been updated to prevent any new Lewinstein Athletic Center membership wellness benefit elections by employees for the remainder of 2026. New hires may elect the Lifestyle Spending Account (LSA) wellness benefit, valued at $250, which offers versatility and flexibility and may be used at any gym, including the Lewinstein Athletic Center, should it open earlier than anticipated.

wellness@dartmouth.edu.
Fitness Classes & PE Requirements
Will fitness classes still be offered during the closure?
Yes. A selection of indoor fitness classes, such as modern dance and Pilates, will be offered in Berry. As usual, the fitness classes are free to students, offered to the public through a class pass membership add-on, and offered at a discounted rate for Dartmouth faculty and staff. Class listings will be available on the
Dartmouth Recreation webpage in June, per their regular timing and processes.
Will the closure affect Dartmouth students' ability to fulfill PE graduation requirements?
No. Ample classes and spaces will be available to fulfill all physical education graduation requirements. Offerings may differ from prior summers, but there will be sufficient options to accommodate all students. PE courses will appear in the regular course registration system.
Will the Straus Dance Studio be open?
Yes. The Straus Dance Studio in the Berry Sports Center will remain fully operational all summer, hosting indoor fitness classes such as modern dance and Pilates. These additional classes will be scheduled around Straus’ regular summer programming.
Will Intramural Sports be affected?
No. Athletics and Recreation will continue to offer its full lineup of summer Intramural sports, including pickleball, tennis, golf, and kickball.
